Highland Hills Medical Center is looking for a Laboratory Assistant, often referred to as a Lab Assistant. This Lab staff member plays a critical support role within a scientific laboratory setting. They work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff, assisting in the smooth operation of the laboratory by performing a variety of tasks. These tasks range from basic sample preparation and equipment maintenance to data entry and inventory management. The specific duties of a Lab Assistant can vary widely depending on the field of science (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics) and the type of laboratory (research, clinical, environmental, etc.).
Key Responsibilities:
- Sample Collection and Preparation:
- Collect, label, and process samples for analysis.
- Prepare samples using specified methodologies including but not limited to centrifuging blood samples and etc.
- Run waived test as explained/trained by techs
- Check all fridges for samples that need to be processed and sent out each morning upon arrival and throughout the day.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, such as microscopes and centrifuges.
- Perform routine checks and basic troubleshooting of equipment.
- Data Management:
- Record experimental data accurately in laboratory notebooks or computer databases.
- Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data, under supervision.
- Monthly documentation brought to lab manager office for proper filing.
- Fax results as needed when requested
- Give infection control documentation to infection control/compliance nurse
- Ensure the laboratory & ER is stocked with necessary supplies and reagents.
- Clean and sterilize laboratory equipment and work areas.
- Check for expiration dates on all supplies in lab, ER and supply room.
- Compliance and Safety:
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Properly handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials.
- Receive samples as they come in immediately in the EHR with correct collection time and collector initials
- Collaborate with laboratory team members to ensure efficient workflow.
- Communicate findings and observations to supervisors and colleagues
- Provide technical support and guidance to staff, if applicable.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and contribute to project planning discussions.
- Any other duties as duties are assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Educational Background: High school diploma is required; phlebotomy training preferred; BLS required
- Technical Skills: Basic understanding of laboratory techniques, familiarity with laboratory equipment, and proficiency in relevant computer software.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to perform tasks with high accuracy and precision.
- Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Safety Conscious: Knowledge of and adherence to laboratory safety regulations and procedures.
